12 Baby Barbary Macaques Born at Monkey Mountain: Meet the New Generation!
While the whole world has its eyes on the FIFA World Cup, another team has just entered the field—this time at Monkey Mountain!
Like promising young football stars, these baby Barbary macaques are taking their very first steps under the watchful eyes of their mothers. After a gestation period of around five and a half months, each female gives birth to a single infant between spring and early summer, giving the youngsters plenty of time to grow before their first winter.
The births take place away from the spotlight. During the quiet of the night, high up in the trees, the females give birth out of sight. Each morning, the park’s nature guides are delighted to discover the newest members of the troop.
With already 12 babies born since the beginning of spring, Monkey Mountain can now field its own team of young talents: eleven starters and one substitute, all irresistibly adorable. A few more “substitutes” are still expected over the coming days.
A Promising Young Team
For now, the youngsters spend most of their time in their mothers’ arms or clinging beneath their belly during the first month before moving onto their backs. In just a few weeks, however, their first “training sessions” will begin as they start jumping, climbing and performing acrobatics in the trees, revealing their unique personalities.
Among Barbary macaques, the “supporters” are not just the mothers. Males also play an active role in raising the infants from their very first days, carrying them, protecting them and grooming them. This is where the real “match” begins, as males cleverly use the babies as social ambassadors to strengthen relationships with other males in the group. This remarkable behaviour is unique among primates and makes Barbary macaques especially fascinating to observe.
The Season Has Officially Kicked Off!
Visitors are invited to meet this promising young team of twelve baby Barbary macaques and witness their first adventures. Between heartwarming moments, fascinating discoveries and unforgettable scenes of daily life, the baby season promises to be full of emotion.
At Monkey Mountain, the next generation has arrived, and the baby season is officially underway!
