Do Barbary macaques live alone,
in pairs or in groups?
in pairs or in groups?
Barbary macaques live in big groups composed by equal numbers of males and females.
Each group has a home-range offering food, water and high trees to be safe from predators.
What do Barbary macaques eat?
In North Africa, they eat different plants (up to 200), small animals such as insects, spiders and even scorpions.
In the park, we feed our monkeys fruit, vegetables and cereals, we also scatter sunflower seeds and wheat. They also eat forest fruit, leaves, grass and insects.
What do the monkeys do in winter?
The monkeys stay outside all year. They originate from mountainous regions in North Africa where the winters are cold and snowy. They are well adapted to this climate: they have a long and thick winter coat, they moult in the spring and they have a short summer coat.
Why do they sleep high in the trees?
Despite there being no predators in our park, the monkeys sleep high up in the trees at night, just like they would in the wild. The trees act as protection from predators in the wild.
Why monkeys can be pets?
In your home a monkey would be deprived of his mothers’ affection, his friends and his forest. Boredom and loneliness will make them the most unhappy animal in the world.
We estimate around 300 babies poached and sold as pets every year in Morocco.
